La Chaise is an important chairs in the development of twentieth-century furniture design, many of which are now in the Museum's design collection.

Created in 1948 as an entry for the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition held by MoMA, the chaise's design was noted for its elegance. Recreated in fiberglass, metal, and wood.

Not only did CHARLES EAMES (1907-1978) and his wife, RAY (1912-1988) design some of the most important examples of 20th century furniture, they also applied their talents to devising ingenious children's toys, puzzles, films, exhibitions and such iconic mid-20th century Los Angeles buildings as the Eames House and Entenza House in Pacific Palisades.

In 1958, Arne Jacobsen designed the Swan Chair for the lobby and reception areas of the Royal Hotel in central Copenhagen. A special attraction for anyone waning to spend a night at the hotel (today renamed to Radisson SAS Royal Hotel) is to ask for room 606. This is the only room in the hotel that appears with the original Arne Jacobsen furniture as swan chair and other design, exactly as when the hotel opened in July 1960.

This organically shaped swan chair has since become synonymous with Danish furniture design throughout the world. Because of the unique shape, the Swan Chair guarantees a bit of privacy in otherwise public spaces, and the Swan Chair– with or without ottoman – is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as the home.

The Egg chair originated in Arne Jacobsen's garage - cast in plaster. Today the synthetic shell is padded with cold foam and covered with fabric or different types of leather resting on a star-shaped aluminium base.

Arne Jacobsen was very productive both as an architect and as a designer. His cooperation with Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. The Ant and Series 7 chairs, produced in 1952, propelled both Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen's names into furniture history. At the end of the 50's Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which introduced the Egg Chair, the Swan Chair, the Swan sofa and Series 3300 to the design world. Arne Jacobsen was and is an admired and outstanding designer. His furniture and other design work have become a national and international heritage.

The shell of the Swan Chair is of polyurethane foam with fiberglass reinforcement. The shell has an adjustable tilt which can be adjusted to the weight of the individual user. The base consists of a satin-polished, welded steel tube and a 4-star base in injection molded aluminium. The Swan Chair may be upholstered with fabric or leather.
